Home Instead Senior Care

Offers Free Alzheimer's Caregiver Training Sessions

Home Instead Senior Care, the world's leading provider of home care services for seniors, recently announced new survey results revealing that Americans fear developing Alzheimer's disease more than any other major life-threatening disease, including cancer, stroke, heart disease and diabetes.

The Marist Institute for Public Opinion survey of more than 1,200 Americans was designed to gain perspective on the most pressing concerns associated with Alzheimer's, including diagnosis and the difficulties of caring for a loved one with the disease. Survey highlights include:
*       Nearly two-thirds of Americans (63 percent ) have had a personal experience with someone with Alzheimer's and/or a serious memory loss problem.
*       61 percent of Americans feel unprepared to care for a loved one diagnosed with the disease.
*       If diagnosed with the disease, Americans most fear the inability to care for oneself, and burdening others (68 percent); followed by losing memory of life and loved ones (32 percent).
*       A plurality of Americans - 44 percent - cite the illness as their most feared disease compared to 33 percent who cite cancer.
*       More than other generations, a majority of Americans over 65 years of age (the silent/greatest generation) - 56 percent - fear an Alzheimer's diagnosis.
*       When asked if it would be harder to receive an Alzheimer's diagnosis or care for someone with the disease, Americans are equally split down the middle, 50/50.

HOME INSTEAD'S ALZHEIMER'S CAREGIVING TRAINING PROGRAM As a response to the fears associated with the disease, and to better equip caregivers to manage difficult behaviors associated with the disease, Home Instead Senior Care recently launched a unique, first-of-its-kind Alzheimer's training program for caregivers, called Alzheimer's CARE. The free training program is available online, and hundreds of free in-person sessions are being offered across the U.S. in December. The Alzheimer's CARE training program is based on input from renown aging and dementia experts, and offers a tailored, fresh approach to coping with challenging behaviors associated with the disease. The approach encourages mental engagement to help relatives remain safely at home and in familiar surroundings as long as possible, and family members learn to immerse themselves in the mindsets of their loved ones to help manage various behavioral symptoms.

Home Instead Senior Care network is the world's leading provider of non-medical in-home care services for seniors, with more than 950 independently owned and operated franchises providing in excess of 45 million hours of care throughout the world. Local Home Instead Senior Care franchise offices employ more than 65,000 CAREGiversSM worldwide who provide basic support services - assistance with activities of daily living (ADLs), personal care, medication reminders, meal preparation, light housekeeping, errands, incidental transportation and shopping - which enable seniors to live safely and comfortably in their own homes for as long as possible. In addition, CAREGivers are trained in the network's groundbreaking Alzheimer's Disease or Other Dementias CARE: Changing Aging Through Research and EducationSM Program to work with seniors who suffer from these conditions. This world class curriculum also is available free to family caregivers online or through local Home Instead Senior Care offices. At Home Instead Senior Care, it's relationship before task, while continuing to provide superior quality service that enhances the lives of seniors everywhere.

"The estimated 15 million Americans caring for a loved one with Alzheimer's are desperate for support and concerned about the care they are providing," said Dr. Amy D'Aprix, aging care expert and a developer of the Home Instead Senior Care Alzheimer's CARE training. "This training will help them cope with daily challenges and prepare them to manage difficult behaviors."

For more information on a training session near you, or to take the free online course, call 888-692-5129 or visit www.helpforalzheimersfamilies.com

R.A.A.N. - The Real-time Air Analysis Network, is a free program provided to the public on the Valley Air District's website, at www.valleyair.org.  RAAN allows you to view current air quality directly from the air monitoring station closest to you.

There are three in San Joaquin County, Stockton, Tracy and Manteca.  Residents can view any or all of the RAAN network monitors and sign up to receive air quality information as changes occur.

RAAN is available at valleyair.org, healthyairliving.com or now by using the Air District iPhone app. (Search "valley air")

2013 Relay For Life of Stockton

June 8-9, 2013
Bear Creek High School
10555 Thornton Rd., Stockton

Length: 24 hours
Starts: 9:00am Sat
Ends: 9:00 am Sun

Open to the public: Walk, run, stroll in a stroller - doesn't matter just get out there and join us!

The American Cancer Society's Relay For Life is a fundraising event that gives everyone in the communities across the globe a chance to celebrate the lives of people who have battled cancer, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the disease.

At Relay, teams of 8 to 20 people camp out and take turns walking or running around the track. Each team is asked to have representative on the track at all times during the event. The events are 24 hours in length symbolizing the fact that cancer never sleeps.

Everyone's reason to participate is as unique as their own personal story. At Relay, you can find healing, comfort, and support from others who have faced cancer or who have lost a love one to the disease. You also have a chance to meet people in the community who are equally as passionate about finding an end to cancer. And you can gather together with family, friends, and colleagues to laugh, cry, and creat lasting memories.

The funds raised at Relay help to pay for the programs and services that the American Cancer Society offers to cancer patients. These services include lodging for caregivers and patients undergoing treatment, transportation to and from treatments, and 24 hour phone support just to name a few. Of course the funds also help to fund the much needed groundbreaking reasearch and new clinical trials to help find an end to this dreaded disease.

Each person who shares the Relay experience can take pride in knowing that they are working to creat a world where this disease will no longer threaten the lives of our loved ones or steal another year of anyone's life.

Join us in the fight!

American Cancer Society

June 1 & 2, 2013 (24hr event)
Lodi Grape Festival Grounds
Check-in:  7:00 a.m.
Start:  9:00 a.m.

Relay for Life is an overnight event that unites our community in a common effort to raise much-needed funds for cancer research, education, advocacy, and patient services.  Every year, the funds we raise help bring the American Cancer Society one step closer to eliminating cancer from our lives for good.

Thanks to our progress, nearly 14 million Americans who have had cancer and countless more who have avoided it will celebrate more birthdays this year. As we mark our 100th birthday in 2013, we're determined to finish the fight against cancer. We're finding cures as the nation’s  largest private, not-for-profit investor in cancer research, ensuring people facing cancer have the help they need and continuing the fight for access to quality health care, lifesaving screenings, clean air, and more.  For more information visit our website at www.relayforlife.org/lodica.  You can also register online for the Relay for Life or make donations at the same website.
